Our healthy cold pressed juices are a great way to boost your intake of fresh fruit and vegetables. As we discussed recently the UK has a relatively low recommended intake of 5 portions of fruit and veg a day. Other countries recommend much higher levels, up to 17 portions a day.
One of the main benefits of consuming a higher number of fresh fruit and vegetables is that you will be able to more easily reach your Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) of vitamins and minerals. Modern industrially farmed vegetables can actually be a lot lower in nutritional value than you might think. A number of studies have shown that there has been a measurable decline in the nutritional value of fruit and vegetables over the last 50 to 100 years.
A study using British government data showed that between 1940 and 1991 potatoes lost 47% of their copper, 45% of their iron and 35% of their calcium. A similar study in Canada looking at the period 1951 to 1999 found that potatoes had lost 100% of their vitamin A and 57% of their vitamin C. Most other fruits and vegetables showed similarly dramatic declines in nutritional value. In many cases it is now necessary to eat 8 or 10 portions of a vegetable to gain the same nutritional value as you would have gained from 1 piece in the 1940s or 1950s.
There is conflicting research on the reasons for the nutritional decline in our fruit and veg. The most commonly cited reasons are depleted nutrition in the soil, the overuse of fertilisers and pesticides and the varieties being grown. In the last case a focus on growing big, uniformly shaped fruit and vegetables as quickly as possible has seen these traits being bred for at the expense of nutritional value.
Organics to the rescue
Part of the reason we use organic fruit and vegetables to make our healthy cold pressed juices is because of their nutritional value.
Most of the loss in nutritional value of fruit and vegetables is associated with industrial farming methods. One area that has largely bucked the trend is organic produce. Many of the fertilisers and pesticides which can contribute to nutrition loss in industrial farmed food are not present in organic farming methods. Similarly organic farms pay more attention to the nutrition in their soil as they can’t rely on fertilisers which in turn means more nutritional value in the produce grown. Research from Newcastle University found that organic fruit and vegetables can contain over 60% more antioxidants than industrial farmed varieties.
By cold pressing fresh organic produce we are able to capture more of those antioxidants and other nutritional value into our healthy juices. All of our juices contain the equivalent of your 5 a day as a minimum, so with the nutritional boost of organic ingredients we are able to really pack in the goodness.
